While the park's mastermind, billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), assures everyone that the facility is safe, they find out otherwise when various ferocious predators break free and go on the hunt!

Into the Underworld

3.jpg

Inside Silo 6, Silo Park

Beneath the banality of Auckland’s sprawling suburbia, there lies an ancient subterranean world.

Into the Underworld / Ngā Mahi Rarowhenua is an exhibition by artist Chirag Jindal in collaboration with speleologist Peter Crossley and composer Peter Hobbs, and follows 3 years of 3D mapping ancient Lava Caves under the streets of Mount Albert, Three Kings, Mount Eden, Mangere and One Tree Hill.

The caves were formed out of local volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago, but without any legal framework during the 20th century, many of the discovered sites have been lost, destroyed, or become a hidden layer beneath the built environment. More than 200 cave entrances have been documented across the isthmus, often behind streetfront garages, private backyards or under roadside manholes, with new sites still being uncovered today.

For 3 weeks in September, the caves will be presented for a second showing in an exhibition of immersive panoramic scans and moving images, revealing the sublime and uncanny narrative of the city’s volcanic underground.

A newly-recorded ambient score composed by award-winning sound artist and musician Peter Hobbs will accompany the work. The piece was recorded deep in a lava cave beneath the Te Tātua-a-Riukiuta (Three Kings) with musicians Maxine Cunliffe on Cello and Charmian Keay on Violin.

The exhibition will also feature screenings of "Meet Peter," a 2017 documentary by filmmaker Gemma Duncan on Peter and his life documenting over 200 caves across the city. Through artful cinematography, the film accounts the derelict state of these forgotten sites, but frames them within the beauty of their fossilised lava flows.

Seeing Sound - A contemporary dance site specific performance

IMG_4122.jpg

Inside Silo 6, Silo Park

Trip Stumble Fall have searched out yet another site within Auckland City to dance in. The silos!
Located down by the (now what is) new flash waterfront. The silos are part of the inner-city furniture and have always been there watching container ships come and go, fisherman dock and unload their hoard.
We will climb into them and investigate their scaps. Taking this exploration to a vibrational level, and playing with the "cylinder" how it carries sound and what the dancing body "sounds" like.
Unlike the usual proscenium theatre outlook for the audience, you will be able to roam around the silo spaces and observe the dance work from many different perspectives.

This week we've got the Coen Brothers’ classic - O Brother, Where Are Thou? Starring George Clooney,  John Turturro, John Goodman, and Holly Hunter.

A bit about the movie: It's the 1930s in the deep south, and three escaped convicts are searching for hidden treasure while trying not to be caught. It’s fun and funny, and a great crime adventure story. And a fun fact, the movie is loosely based on ancient Greek writer Homer’s masterpiece The Odyssey.

Settle in on the grassy park with a blanket and bean bag as the sun goes down a true Silo Park summer Friday night.

This week it’s the cult classic space odyssey, Guardians of the Galaxy. In Chris Pratt’s breakout role we see him team up with a collection of space misfits on a hilarious quest from one end of the universe to the other.

What to expect: A fanatical warrior wants to take control of the universe, and only a group of intergalactic criminals can stop him.

If you haven’t seen this film before, we highly recommend it for little and big kids alike. It’s a family classic with a rollocking story. Don’t forget your blanket or rug, and something comfy to sit on.

Exhibition Open:
Wed, Thur, Sat, Sun  11am – 3pm
Late nights: Fri 6 & 13 April, 5pm – 10pm
Artist talk: Sat 7 April, 1pm – 2pm

Seizing upon the precise moments after exiting a sauna, Aaron Burgess’ solo exhibition “Heat Tonic” captures the transformative effects of the health practice on both body and mind. Heat Tonic, Silo 6, Auckland, April 6 - 19

Prompted by new research suggesting that regular sauna users reap a multitude of health benefits including increased life expectancy, the New Zealand based photographer focus’ on revealing those positive transformations. The life size series of portraits showcased in Burgess’ solo exhibition at Silo 6  reveal an intimate glimpse of the unguarded, transformed self.

While shooting the images in Auckland, Burgess noticed that the sauna also acted as a medium to break down the wall between photographer and subject. “After a sauna, people begin to relax, letting down their guard and almost forgetting about the camera”, he says, “capturing a real, natural and honest reflection of the sitter.”

Burgess’ interest evolved from witnessing first-hand the physical and mental change that occurs after relaxing in a sauna. Though the high heat in a sauna session speeds up the heart rate, the calm quiet environment simultaneously relaxes the body and mind. “It’s this transformation, exposed through posture and expression, that’s captured in these portraits”, shot straight after each subject emerged from the sauna.

Through his ‘Heat Tonic’ series, Burgess not only explores deeper intimacy, but also promotes the value of sauna for personal health and wellbeing. Recent research in Finland by Jari Laukkanen, M.D., Ph.D., shows that regular time spent in a sauna can reduce all causes of death by up to 40 percent. Regular sauna sessions, of 4-7 times per week, showed a 63 percent lesser risk of heart attack and stroke, along with a 66 percent reduction in Alzheimer’s and dementia.

"Sauna is for your mind. It really helps you to calm down in a modern society where it is never quiet," says Jarmo Lehtola, head of the Finnish Sauna Society, a country with 5 million people and 3.2 million saunas. "You enter this meditative place”.

Between Two _________

Inside Silo 6, Silo Park

Exhibition Open:
Thursday 15th   6pm - 8pm
Friday 16th   10am - 4pm
Saturday 17th   10am - 4pm
Sunday 18th   10am - 3pm

Daily Performances:
11am & 1pm

Between Two _________ is an exhibition in dual sites within Auckland city: St Paul St Gallery Three and Silo 6. The exhibition performs a spatial practice across performance and installation approaches conceived as site-writings. Site-writings pertain specifically to modes of revealing existential belonging expressed through everyday connection to urban ruins. More than architectural figures, ruins reveal an expansive site inseparable to human mood, material histories, concepts and ideologies. Between Two_______ focuses its ruinous site-writings on processes of mourning for silent expression in ‘dialogue’ between these two sites. Ineffable translations invite moments of ‘temporary sanctuary’ for viewers, through expressions of temporal and spatial difference rendered by repetitions, extended durations and urban genealogies of dwelling.

Mourning reveals (its) truth as fragmentary, fleeting and transitory through movements of withdraw as un-concealing. There is a homophonic ineffability sounding ‘sites’—offering nuanced readings within the gift of language: Sight and cite reveal mourning stones or songs siting material signifiers for remembering those who have come before us — we sight or remember them through these mourning-stones and hear them call to us (in their mourning-songs), citing us in their names, places, histories and concepts. We sight, site and cite their calls into futures as we carry (them) on. In the aims of this exhibition (and its underlying PhD research) mourning reveals something life affirming—expanding our concepts of time, space and history—in dwelling with (human and non human) others.
