Bug Lab

bug-lab-banner-hero.jpg

The installation of an art piece that creates awareness around the upcoming Auckland Zoo Bug Lab exhibition. The installation in Silo park is from 29th November – 19th December and the exhibition will open at Auckland Zoo on 20th of December.

The installation consists of a 9m x 9m spider web made from UV rope, with the addition of floodlights to illuminate the web after dark.

During the day the web will be a huge draw card for children and adults alike – a 9m x 9m white spider web displaying itself in all it’s glory on the gantry, conveniently located near the vicinity of a playground and the Silo Park markets. At night the installation will illuminate and almost sparkle – with the UV rope being illuminated with black lights so the web will glow.

Not only is this spider web visually striking, it’s  as close to accurate as a 9mx 9m rope spider web can be! TePapa’s spider experts have curated our designs so to ensure the final result is as close to how a real Katipo Spider web would be formed in pattern.

Into the Underworld

Into the Underworld

Beneath the banality of Auckland’s sprawling suburbia, there lies an ancient subterranean world.

Into the Underworld is an art-science collaboration between digital artist Chirag Jindal and speleologist Peter Crossley, and follows 2 years of advanced 3D scanning research into the lava caves under the suburbs of Mount Albert, Three Kings, Mount Eden, Mangere and One Tree Hill. For 3 weeks only in December, the caves will be presented in an exhibition of immersive panoramic prints, moving images and 3d-printed models, revealing the sublime and uncanny narrative of the city’s volcanic underground.

The exhibition will also feature screenings of "Meet Peter," a 2017 fresh shorts documentary by filmmaker Gemma Duncan on Peter and his life documenting over 200 caves across the city. Through artful cinematography, the film accounts the derelict state of these forgotten sites, but frames them within the beauty of their fossilised lava flows.

Join us for the opening night on Friday the 8th of December and RSVP here.

The exhibition will be open from midday onwards from Saturday 9th December - Sunday 24th December @ Silo Park, Wynyard Quarter. Closing times are 10pm from the 9th-20th, and midnight from the 21st-23rd.

Please note that the exhibition will close at 4pm on Christmas Eve.

This week we're watching Lion, an unforgettable odyssey of eternal hope and crushing sadness,  based on a true story.

A little bit about Lion: A young Indian boy falls asleep on a train that takes him miles from home and his family. Lost and terrified, he fends for himself through the perils of a big city before a bit of luck sees him adopted by an Australian family. Friday nights are quite alright! Especially down at Silo Park, your downtown oasis. Food trucks galore, the world famous Silo Bar, fab weather & a great movie, there really isn't a better way to start your weekend. Bring your pals and make some memories.

As with every year at Silo Cinema, we like to show the most cutting edge and informative documentaries, either contemporary or classic, and often ones that make us and our audience question society, and the socials parameters we live within.

This week we're bringing to the screen I Am Not Your Negro, one of the best loved and most acclaimed films from 2017’s NZIFF. This feature length documentary, narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, is inspired by James Baldwin's unfinished manuscript and recounts the lives of his close friends and civil rights leaders Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., & Medgar Evers.

A modern masterpiece in documentary cinema.

Enjoy the summer vibes, good times atmosphere, & fab food trucks down at Silo Park this Friday.

We’re celebrating Auckland - our fair city - this anniversary weekend. And we have decided to do so in gloriously spooky fashion by screening a documentary, shot in Auckland.

Bring along your scaredy cat mates to this week's movie and help them face their fears. We're watching Spookers!

This funny and improbably charming documentary, created by Kiwi/ German film maker Florian Habicht was a crowd favourite and breakout hit at the 2017 NZIFF. Taking a peak behind the gory curtain of Spookers, the hugely popular horror theme park, situated at the former Kingseat Hospital, to show us the real lives of the actors and the close knit community they have created.

Don't forget your rugs & blankets for comfort (and for hiding behind if necessary - we don't judge), and enjoy!
