Into the Underworld

  • Silo6, Silo Park Corner of Beaumont and Jellicoe Street Auckland New Zealand (map)

Beneath the banality of Auckland’s sprawling suburbia, there lies an ancient subterranean world.

Into the Underworld is an art-science collaboration between digital artist Chirag Jindal and speleologist Peter Crossley, and follows 2 years of advanced 3D scanning research into the lava caves under the suburbs of Mount Albert, Three Kings, Mount Eden, Mangere and One Tree Hill. For 3 weeks only in December, the caves will be presented in an exhibition of immersive panoramic prints, moving images and 3d-printed models, revealing the sublime and uncanny narrative of the city’s volcanic underground.

The exhibition will also feature screenings of "Meet Peter," a 2017 fresh shorts documentary by filmmaker Gemma Duncan on Peter and his life documenting over 200 caves across the city. Through artful cinematography, the film accounts the derelict state of these forgotten sites, but frames them within the beauty of their fossilised lava flows.

Join us for the opening night on Friday the 8th of December and RSVP here.

The exhibition will be open from midday onwards from Saturday 9th December - Sunday 24th December @ Silo Park, Wynyard Quarter. Closing times are 10pm from the 9th-20th, and midnight from the 21st-23rd.

Please note that the exhibition will close at 4pm on Christmas Eve.
